A Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) rig is a trenchless construction machine used to install various underground utilities—including pipelines, cables, and conduits—without excavating the ground surface. This technology combines directional drilling techniques from the oil and gas industry with traditional pipeline construction methods, delivering fast, accurate, and cost-effective underground installations.
HDD rigs typically consist of five core systems: the drilling rig system (the main drilling unit and rotary table), power system (hydraulic power source and generator), steering system (computer-monitored guidance for precise drilling), mud system (mixing tank, pump, and circulation lines), and drilling tools and auxiliary equipment (drill pipes, bits, reamers, and pulling heads).
